Back to running after surgery...3 months in

Life is good! After a little blip at 4 weeks (doing too much too soon as you'll have read on my earlier blog) everything is going really well.

My first ParkRun at the end of February was a massive milestone...my slowest ParkRun ever but my aim was to run without stopping ...and I did it! As usual...tea and cake afterwards was my celebration...and my goodness, it tasted good that day!

From that point on, I was able to slowly increase the number of miles I ran without stopping....and most importantly, I was able to start training with my running club again. Having been a member of our local running club for over 35 years, this group of friends are such a massive part of our lives, so to be able to run with them all again was the best feeling.

My aim when I had my surgery at the end of Octber 2024 was to run a ParkRun by London Marathon Day (bitter sweet as I should have been running the Marathon as my 30th road marathon...but perspective changes when your plans have to change...and for me, a 5K was going to be my marathon that day). But things have gone so well that I am 'ahead of schedule' and I have now done several ParkRuns -including three of them with our dog who is delighted to be back in his running harness!- I have run my first league race (since surgery ) proudly wearing my club vest, and I am hoping to be able to run our local half marathon in May.

Having been told back in October by my surgeon that he could not guarantee I would run again post-surgery, it is the best feeling ever to be back in my running shoes.

If any of you out there are struggling with injury...keep positive...listen to the advice you're given and put together a recovery plan with little achieveable steps along the way. My first 5K became my 'marathon' but I am hoping to be back on a 'real' marathon start line again before too long.

First league race post-surgery. A great feeling to be back in club colours.
